Pilates Connection Chicago teaches the Pilates method developed by Joseph Pilates and handed down to his protégé, Romana Kryzanowska. The studio was founded in 2005 by Rhonda Celenza, Level II Master Instructor Trainer who was trained by Romana and Juanita Lopez, Level I Grand Master Instructor Trainer. Juanita was personally selected by Romana herself to train teachers in Chicago.
The studio is now owned by Andrea Versenyi and Dawn Friedman, Level IV Instructor Trainers. We are a fully equipped studio with classical apparatuses based on Joseph Pilates’ original specifications.
All Pilates Connection teachers are certified by Romana’s Pilates International and continue regular study with master teachers and in ongoing continuing education.
In addition to teaching private clients, we are the Midwest Teacher Training Center for Romana’s Pilates International, training the next generation of instructors.
Romana’s Pilates International is the teacher-training program created by Joseph Pilates’ protégé, Romana Kryzanowska. It is now led by Romana’s daughter, Sari Mejia Santo, and her granddaughter, Daria Pace.
Romana’s Pilates International has developed a rigorous program that trains future instructors in the entire Pilates system, at all levels and on all apparatuses. New trainees (apprentices) must pass a proficiency assessment to begin the training program, which consists of three stages with written and practical exams, private lessons, observation, and supervised hands-on teaching. The program takes about one year to complete, with approximately 800 hours of study. Once certified, instructors must attend Continuing Professional Education (CPE) seminars.
Pilates Connection Chicago is the only official Romana’s Pilates International Teacher Training Center in the Chicagoland area. All Pilates Connection teachers are certified by Romana's Pilates International and regularly take private lessons and attend seminars and workshops with master teachers.
Joseph H. Pilates was born in Germany in 1883. A sickly child who suffered from asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever, he dedicated his entire life to becoming physically stronger. Joe studied body building and gymnastics and by the age of 14 was fit enough to pose for anatomical charts.
In 1914 he moved to England, earning a living as a boxer, circus performer and self-defense trainer. During World War I he was interned in England with other German citizens, where he trained other inmates in fitness and exercises. It was here that the beginnings of the Pilates Method began to take shape. After the war, Pilates emigrated to the United States.
On the ship to America, he met his future wife, Clara. The couple founded a studio in New York City and directly taught their students into the 1960s. Pilates and his method, which he and Clara called “Contrology,” developed a following in the dance and the performing arts communities. Pilates considered Contrology to be the complete coordination of the body, mind, and spirit. Well-known dancers George Balanchine, Martha Graham, and Ruth St. Dennis became devotees and sent their students to Joe and Clara for training.
Pilates practiced what he preached and lived a long, healthy life. He died in 1967 at the age of 83. Today, Pilates is practiced around the world by athletes, dancers, fitness professionals, as well as the general public.
